Edmonton lawyer Crystal Lawrence answers the top three questions about Family, Criminal and Immigration law
How does mediation work in a family law dispute?
The Parties involved can attend on their own or they can be accompanied by independent counsel who advise them of their rights. The mediator is a lawyer who listens to the parties and helps guide them to a resolution, if possible. Another option is a Judicial Dispute Resolution (JDR), where a Judge listens to the parties and helps guide them to a resolution, if possible. The parties can do this with or without a lawyer. The Judge who conducts the JDR cannot hear a trial on the matter.
What is the biggest mistake made by people who have been charged with a crime?
The biggest mistake is making a voluntary statement to the police without retaining counsel. Taking "jailhouse" advice is often another big mistake. When dealing with any criminal matter, always consult with a lawyer as soon as possible.
What is the Number 1 rule of thumb when dealing with an Immigration matter?
Always be honest and consistent. Your immigration status can be eradicated if dishonesty or inconsistencies are discovered at any point, including many years after the information was supplied. If you have multiple applications, ensure that the information supplied is consistent, which means that all applications must reflect any updates made originally on a single application.
